Lima Bean Pod Borer

Description:

Pink, pale yellow head; up to 1/8 inch long. Wriggles violently when disturbed.

Common host plant(s):

Lima beans.

Damage:

Bores through lima bean pods and eats seed. Seldom a pest of snap beans.

Distribution:

Southern part of United States; most damaging in California.

Cultural Control:

Hand-picking is usually sufficient in keeping these pests below damaging numbers. Crop rotation is also recommended where lima bean pod borers are a problem.

Organic/Biological Control:

Some botanical insecticides may be effective against lima bean pod borers, see labels.

Chemical Control:

Use an inseticide labeled for lima beans when damage first noticed.
