Research is conducted on insect pests and their natural enemies in forest and Christmas tree settings. Emphasis is placed on studying their biology, sensory physiology, and behavior, followed by the development of environmentally sensitive pest management tactics. Current studies focus on semiochemical-based behavior of southern pine beetle (SPB) and associates, development of an inhibitor-based suppression tactic for the SPB, evaluating the importance of insect vectors of a fungal pathogen to pine Christmas trees, and study of the life history and impact of the hemlock woolly adelgid in the Appalachians.
