Identification of Termites

The most common termite in Virginia by far the is Eastern Subterranean Termite. The drywood termite is included mostly for comparison.

Termites, two choices

EASTERN SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES are the most common termites in Virginia. If they are swarming in your house in the spring then you most likely have an infestation of this species. Use an ice pick to probe the wood at the base of the house for tunnels. Eastern subterranean termites leave MUD and MUD TUBES in their nest and have connections to the soil. DRYWOOD TERMITES are very uncommon in Virginia but have been found in a few locations. They nest usually in furniture and in wood that has no contact with soil. They have no mud tubes or mud. They leave small uniform pellets in their tunnels. If you think you have this bring a sample to your local extension office for identification
